The Junior Choral Course

Information for Parents

The Junior Choral Course offers unique opportunities to children aged 8 -15 to experience choral singing at a very high level. The course staff are all accomplished singers, and their voices join the young people to enable them to sing some of the great choral repertoire for four voices, alongside good music written for the students’ higher voices. The proof of the success of the courses lies in the very high proportion of participants who return year after year, many of them attending multiple courses and bringing with them younger brothers and sisters. The culmination of the course is the final concert, which will combine a major work from the choral repertoire and lighter music.

During the week the young people will work hard at a range of music, both with their sectional tutors and as a whole group.  Free time is equally important and a wide range of activities is organised every afternoon, with a strong emphasis on fun! The Junior Choral Courses are open to all, irrespective of school, and means-tested bursaries are available. Each course will be under the musical direction of Ralph Allwood and Martyn Ford.

Frequently Asked Questions

From 8 to 15 years

The course is residential, and in addition to the Musical Directors will be fully supervised by our experienced pastoral staff, headed by our houseparents and our Matron.

The young people will be accommodated in boarding houses with a combination of single and twin occupancy rooms, and small dormitories. We endeavour to ensure where possible that participants who have particular friends on the course are accommodated close together. Meals will be taken by young people and staff together in the main Dining Hall.

A wide range of music will be covered – from sacred to secular and from serious to light. Each course ends with a final concert which will be in two parts – in the first half the students will perform the lighter music they have prepared, following which we move to the College’s magnificent chapel for a performance of the major choral work.

The young people will have the unique experience of singing wonderful music alongside the highly-trained adult voices of the course staff and friends. And, of course, ability to sight-read is not an entry requirement – that’s one of the things that we teach during the course!

Attendance at the first two courses costs £710, and for the third course £760 to cover all tuition, accommodation and use of the relevant school facilities. There is a discount of 5% for families who make two bookings for the year, and 10% for three or more bookings. For next year’s courses we shall again be supplying each student with a folder containing all the music to be covered by the course, for which we shall be asking for payment, and which will be theirs to take home afterwards.

We want access to our courses to be as open as possible. We are inviting parents to make a voluntary donation of £15 with each course application to help us to achieve this. These donations will be to The Choral Course Foundation, registered charity No. 1147832, recently established to enable young and enthusiastic singers to attend choral courses irrespective of experience or financial constraint.
